The Chilean Senate has approved a measure that forbids slot machines in locations other than gambling establishments. The measure, which received unanimous support with 29 votes, will now be considered by the House of Representatives.

The measure defines slot machines as any electronic system that accepts wagers, provides players with time, and awards prizes through a random process. As slot machines are games of chance, they are prohibited outside of casinos without a permit. This does not yet apply to online slot machines.

Penalties for breaking this law include imprisonment and a fine of up to CLP$10.4m (£10,025/€11,694/US$13,911). Potential vendors have 180 days from the bill’s enactment to apply for a license with the casino regulator and public sector.

This is the most recent action by the Chilean government to regulate the gambling sector. The nation plans to announce the legalization of online gambling in February.
