The Ontario Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) has levied a $100,000 fine on DraftKings for breaching the regulator’s guidelines on gambling promotion and enticement.

The AGCO determined that between May 19 and May 31, DraftKings “published or aired numerous widespread inducements to gamble,” encompassing advertisements showcasing enhanced odds.

This action contravenes provincial sports betting regulations, which stipulate that enticements, bonuses, and points can solely be advertised on the operator’s online platform or through targeted marketing initiatives.

The AGCO asserted that these standards are intended to safeguard Ontario residents.

Operators possess the right to appeal to the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), an integral component of the Ontario Court.

This marks the third regulatory action undertaken by the AGCO against advertising since the market’s inauguration on April 4. In the preceding month, BetMGM and PointsBet were penalized $48,000 and $30,000, respectively, for inducement violations.

Tom Mungham, the head honcho and official registrar of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), declared: “The AGCO will keep a watchful eye on the actions of all registered operators and make sure they adhere to high standards of responsible gambling, player safety, and game fairness.” “For the benefit of the public, we must ensure they are fulfilling their duties under the Ontario Gaming Control Act and our regulations.”
