The iconic Churchill Downs is bolstering its Kentucky equine racing dominion. Their latest acquisition, the storied Ellis Park, renowned for its summertime thoroughbred competitions, was secured for a cool $79 million. This move transcends a simple purchase; it represents a comprehensive rejuvenation endeavor. Churchill Downs intends to bestow upon Ellis Park a significant makeover, enhancing the racing infrastructure and even constructing a novel entertainment destination in the heart of Owensboro. Envision 600 cutting-edge historical racing terminals, a simulcasting hub, and an array of culinary choices. This ambitious undertaking, carrying a $75 million price tag, has generated widespread enthusiasm, from the state’s chief executive to ardent racing aficionados. Churchill Downs, already a titan within the industry, is strategically positioned to elevate Ellis Park into a shining gem of Kentucky racing.

Our group is thrilled to initiate a summer gathering at The Pea Patch. The goal is to provide Kentucky equines and their conditioners with increased incentives to remain local, while simultaneously attracting the top-ranked horses nationwide to the Bluegrass State throughout July and August.

This financial commitment will ensure that Kentucky boasts the nation’s premier year-round racing circuit, generating employment opportunities across the area. Churchill Downs is an outstanding community collaborator, and we are pleased to join forces with them on this endeavor.
