The Scandinavian nation of Sweden is escalating its efforts to combat the manipulation of sporting events, and the wagering sector stands firmly behind them. The government aims to streamline the process of information exchange regarding dubious occurrences, a development warmly welcomed by the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS).

This proposition, known informally as “Fi2024/00220,” is viewed by them as a pivotal shift. Gustav Hoffstedt, the Secretary General of BOS, succinctly stated that an untainted sporting landscape is paramount for their industry’s success. No one desires to place wagers on a predetermined outcome, and the sector recognizes that a firm stance against match-fixing is the optimal approach to ensure customer satisfaction and responsible gaming practices.

The BOS represents a substantial portion of the Swedish betting market, boasting prominent members such as 888 William Hill, Betsson, and bet365 among its ranks. They unanimously concur that the dissemination of information regarding potential infractions, whether they involve illicit activities or mere rule-bending, is of paramount importance. This action sends an unambiguous signal: Sweden is resolute in its commitment to upholding fairness in sports.

Its fantastic to witness the government finally acknowledging the problem of uncontrolled wagering, a domain where the Swedish Betting Operators Association (BOS) and comparable groups like SPER, alongside national athletic organizations, have been cooperating for an extended period.

The objective is to elevate the channeling proportion, signifying attracting more individuals to engage in betting through authorized providers.

BOS determined that in March 2023, the channeling percentage for competitive gaming was 77%, whereas it reached 84% for conventional sports wagering (excluding horse racing).

Esports is especially susceptible to match manipulation, prompting the Swedish gaming regulator to recently prohibit two additional skin betting platforms from providing services to players within the nation.
