Ontario is implementing stricter regulations on gaming promotions targeting youth. Effective February 28, 2024, endorsements of internet gaming sites by well-known athletes or personalities will be prohibited. This restriction, established by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), also encompasses social media influencers, animated figures, or emblems that could be attractive to a younger demographic. The AGCO is undertaking this action to safeguard young individuals from the hazards linked with wagering. They acknowledged that children can be readily swayed by the sports figures and public figures they idolize, rendering them more vulnerable to gaming advertisements. This resolution follows months of discussions with diverse stakeholders, including health institutions, responsible gaming specialists, and the community. Tom Mungham, Chief Executive Officer of AGCO, stressed the significance of shielding Ontario’s young people, asserting that this measure will contribute to establishing a more secure setting for them.

In addition to being prohibited from collaborating with social media personalities, gaming operators in Ontario face numerous regulations imposed by the AGCO.

One example is the restriction against using terminology that could be attractive to minors, along with stringent policies regarding advertisement placement – specifically excluding educational institutions and areas frequented by youth.

Anticipated in the upcoming weeks are even more detailed directives from the AGCO, urging gaming entities to take notice. This follows a significant penalty of $100,000 (CAD) levied against Apollo Entertainment for failing to comply with responsible gaming protocols. It appears Ontario is committed to ensuring gambling remains secure and inaccessible to underage individuals.
